Many companies have their own safety procedures to control Hot Works and have their own definitions of what is a Hot Work. This theme brings much controversy and doubts. Although there is no specific legislation on this subject in Brazil, the Norma Regulamentadora NR-34, which brings the minimum requirements and measures to protect the safety, health and the environment related to works in shipbuilding and repair industry, defines Hot Work as being “activities that can generate ignition sources such as heating, spark or flame”.

It is up to the professionals involved in the subject to deeply analyse the works that can generate heat, mainly through sparks, since they can be originated from as diverse places/situations as possible. In addition, the workplace and its surroundings should be thoroughly evaluated in relation to the presence of flammable vapours, gases and powders, the available ventilation, etc.
